why?
Julia and I watched Food Inc. last night at our house in Victoria BC. I’ll spare you the soapboxing and tell you that we eat out sometimes. I feel like there are so many great restaurants in Victoria right now, an endless option of places to buy a convenient, quick meal when we both feel instantly hungry and not inspired to fire up the stove. We support local business by eating at places like Ferris’, Pink Bicycle and Lady Marmalade. Our latest favourite is Foo; Asian takeout with brilliant flavours and a cute little location right downtown by the movie theatres. We both cook at home. We dabble in amateur baking. We run in both worlds: The eat-in couple and the “lazy” folks who like eating Naan Pizza at The Mint on Tuesdays. Our problem doesn’t seem to be in dropping $30 on takeout Thai, it seems to be in spending an extra $2.50 on local milk or seasonal organic fruit.
I am so freaked out by documentaries like King Corn and Food Inc. The idea that most of our beef comes packaged with ammonia just seems wrong to me. The fact that food travels 1500 miles on average before it reaches you plate is puzzling! Why are we dedicated to convenience? Why does local and organic food cost more, when it travels less and is more simple? I don't know what the difference in taste or health benefits are, but I am hoping that we find out how to eat seasonally and cost effectively. It has taken me 23 years of eating both organic and heavily processed food to decide this: I actually feel better when I eat something that I perceive to be good for me. If I feel good and excited about food, I want to cook more. If I am invested in maintaining my body and thinking about not just myself, but the whole ecosystem of the earth, I want to change how I eat and find out where I am getting my food from. I'm doing it. We're going to start small and build from there. I'm starting with cereal and milk!
If you are interested in what I’m doing to eat more local, organic food, or have any bits of advice on where to source alternative, cheap(ish) items please get in touch with me here. These are my first steps, below:
